Supporting disabled learners and their next steps
Disabled Student Futures works with school and college leaders, teaching staff, pastoral teams and careers colleagues to strengthen disability knowledge. We help teams examine how policies are experienced by learners and identify practical changes in teaching, communication, support and progression.
Our briefings can support a staff development day, leadership meeting, conference or programme of team discussions. Sessions connect disability awareness with the decisions staff make in everyday school and college life.
Briefings for leaders and staff
-
From policy to everyday practice — addressing the gap between inclusion commitments and staff attitudes, routines and decisions.
-
Understanding disability and neurodivergence — less visible disabilities, different perspectives on disability, ADHD and barriers to participation.
-
Reasonable adjustments in education — considering access needs in teaching, assessment, communication, environments and events.
-
Disclosure and trust — understanding why learners may remain silent and how staff can make conversations about support easier.
-
Recognising distress — responding safely and appropriately, within staff roles and existing safeguarding and referral procedures.
-
Challenging ableist assumptions — recognising unconscious bias, repeated demands for proof and expectations that can exclude learners.

Progress sessions for neurodivergent and disabled learners
Year-11 and year-13 sessions help neurodivergent and disabled learners recognise their strengths, build confidence and prepare for further study, apprenticeships or employment. Topics can include discussing access needs, identifying supportive organisations, accessible job searching, recruitment adjustments, interviews and assessment centres.
Consultancy
and reviews
We can review selected policies, communications and learner transition processes, or explore how teaching, pastoral support and especially careers teams coordinate their work. The scope is agreed with you and can include staff discussions and learner perspectives where appropriate.
Agreed outputs can include concise findings report, prioritised recommendations, named responsibilities and a timetable for reviewing progress.
What your organisation can take forward
Each engagement focuses on practical actions relevant to your setting. We agree the learning goals, resources and evaluation arrangements in advance, helping staff connect the session with their responsibilities and the learners they support.
Discuss support for your school or college
Tell us about your organisation, audience and the issue you want to address. We can discuss a suitable approach and, where appropriate, prepare a proposal setting out the work, outputs, timings and fees.
